TRANSPORTATION

Roads:

The Netherlands have a very high amount of well-constructed bicycle lanes with some including traffic lights. Biking is a common way of transport, and there are big bicycle parkings near stations. also it is considered safe enough not to wear helmets.

Highways:
  • total: 125,575 km
  • paved: 113,018 km (including 2,235 km of expressways)
  • unpaved: 12,557 km (1998 est.)
The Netherlands has one of the most dense highway networks in the world. There are 135,470 km of public roads, of which 5,012 km are national roads, 7,899 km are provincial roads, and 122,559 km are local and other roads. The Netherlands has a motorway density of 57,5 kilometers per 1,000 km², the most dense motorway network in the European Union.

Railroads:

Rail transport in the Netherlands utilises a 2809 km long network maintained by ProRail and operated by a number of different operators. The entire network is standard gauge.

Operators:
  • Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS; Dutch Railways) - core network, including parts with a night service (see below), and also some secondary lines
  • Arriva Netherlands - the northern secondary lines, and a central line
  • Syntus - eastern secondary lines
  • Veolia Transport - southern secondary lines
  • Connexxion - two secondary lines
  • NS Hispeed - main international trains
A few Dutch railway stations are served, even for journeys within the country, by foreign railway companies under the responsibility of NS; these companies are:
  • DB Regio, including DB Regionalbahn Westfalen and DB Euregiobahn
  • Prignitzer Eisenbahn (part of Arriva Germany)
All have a common tariff system. Most trains have 1st and 2nd class; some local trains belonging to Syntus only have 2nd class.

The largest cargo carrier in the Netherlands is Railion, others are Dillen & Le Jeune Cargo, ERS Railways, Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln, Rail4chem and Veolia Cargo.

The whole network itself is maintained and organised by the government agency ProRail, it is also responsible for allocating slots to the different companies.

Recent and new tracks:
  • Betuweroute, A freight line from Rotterdam to Germany.
  • Hemboog between Schiphol/Amsterdam-Lelylaan and Zaandam, bypassing the crossing at Amsterdam Sloterdijk. It provides a direct connection between Schiphol and Zaandam/Hoorn. Technically it also allows for a direct train service from Schiphol to Alkmaar, but such a service is not provided yet.
  • Gooiboog between Hilversum/Naarden-Bussum and Almere Muziekwijk.
  • Utrechtboog between Schiphol/Amsterdam-Rai and Bijlmer/Utrecht, bypassing the crossing at Duivendrecht.
Under construction:
  • The HSL-Zuid
  • The Hanzelijn, a planned railway line Lelystad-Dronten-Kampen-Zwolle.
  • The re-building of the railway between Maastricht and Lanaken (B). Dutch part scheduled to be complete in 2009.
Two stations are located at a bilevel crossing of railway lines: Amsterdam Sloterdijk and Duivendrecht.

Aviation:

The largest airport by far is Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, which is actually one of the largest of Europe. Smaller airports with scheduled passenger service are Rotterdam Airport (formerly known as Zestienhoven), Groningen Airport Eelde, Eindhoven Airport and Maastricht Aachen Airport. De Peel, Valkenburg and Soesterberg have been closed as a military airports, and are now mainly used by gliders. The future of former military airport Twente is uncertain.

Rarely used helipads without an ICAO indicator, offshore oilrigs and small glider fields are not included in this list. Medical helipads have been assigned the identification codes EH0001 to EH0030 by the Dutch authorities, but these are not official ICAO indicators and thus these helipads are not included in this list.

The Maasvlakte and IJmuiden helipads are restricted to maritime piloting services and are not connected to the AFTN network. For Middenmeer and Oostwold the locators EHMM and EHOW respectively are used on occasion, however, as of yet they have not been officially assigned to these airports by ICAO. Jeppesen uses location code EH01 for Oostwold airport (not to be confused with the EH0001 locator assigned by the Dutch authorities to the VU Medisch Centrum helipad in Amsterdam).
